Adam and the Glamily head into the eye of the homophobic storm

Tomorrow, Adam and the Glamily will perform in St. Petersburg, a city that has outlawed promotion of full equality and self-determination for some adults. I am completely convinced that Adam will do a great, somewhat restrained show. And everything will be calm, like being in the eye of a hurricane. After he leaves, a storm may rage, but this is a storm that Russians need to resolve with little interference from Western pop stars. BUT there is something we all can do.
A bit of background. The New York Times reported on February 29, 2012:
MOSCOW — St. Petersburg’s legislature passed a law on Wednesday aimed at eliminating what its backers called “propaganda” of homosexuality among minors, prompting fears among gay rights groups of an impending crackdown on their activities as other cities vowed to look into adopting similar measures.
The law, which follows similar legislation passed elsewhere recently, appears to be a reaction to increasingly vocal efforts by gay rights groups, particularly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, to attract attention to the issue.
Vitaly V. Milonov, the law’s principal drafter and an outspoken proponent of Russia's Orthodox Church, who has referred to gay people as “perverts,” has accused gay rights activists of waging an aggressive campaign of conversion among Russia’s children with the backing of Western governments.

So back to Adam. When he sings "Outlaws of Love" [which I hope and expect he will] in St. Petersburg, it will technically violate this law. No government official will do anything. But this song will take on special meaning when performed in this city with this law in place. And how can a law that bans this beautiful song be just or good for society?
I believe real change can come from education and discussion and helping people understand and building trust, not from any kind of aggression and conflict. BUT that does not mean that we cannot do amything.

Milan, Turin and Venice, Italy suspended their sister city status with St. Petersburg, Russia over the city's adoption ofan anti-gay law.
There are a number of sister cities that would do well to follow suit -- most significantly, Adam's home town of Los Angeles, California. In the past Adam fans have used their energy to raise money for great causes, win some meahningful and not so meaningful polls, request songs, and support Adam. Perhaps, we can do a bit more. Perhaps, we can join the international effort to get cities to suspend their sister status with St. Petersburg. It will not change the world but it could help show support for LGBT people, their friends and families, in Russia.
